Choosing signs

A sign is rarely a nice-to-have. Contractors want one planted on the lawn of every project, realtors need them at the corner, shops put them on the sidewalk and event organizers need arrows that keep people from wandering into the kitchen. Custom signs get bought with a job to do, so the best way to shop is to begin with that job and work backward.

Ask where someone will be standing when they read it. A sidewalk sign can carry a couple of lines, but a lawn sign seen from a passing car should stick to a name and a phone number or website. High contrast does more than a clever colour scheme ever will. Stick to dark on light or light on dark, and leave the gradient for the website.

After that, get practical about installation and how long it needs to last. Stakes, frames, stands and wall mounts suit different spots, and a sign that's outdoors for months has a harder life than one used for an afternoon. Two-sided may be worth the extra money anywhere traffic comes from both directions. Your municipality or landlord may also have opinions, so check first.
