Choosing bags

A bag is a billboard with handles. Every time someone carries a tote through a parking lot or a farmers' market, your logo gets a free walk around the neighbourhood. Conferences, retail shops, libraries, non-profits and anyone stuffing swag into something at an event all come here, usually starting with tote bags and working outward to duffels, drawstrings and travel styles.

Decide what the bag has to hold before you look at anything else. Conference handouts ask very little of a bag, but groceries and laptops are a different story, so judge size and construction by the real load. Handle length is easy to overlook, too. If it can't go over a shoulder with a winter coat on, Canadians will notice around November.

Flat panels are generous for artwork, which means you can go bigger here than on almost any other product. Use that space with some restraint, though: a confident logo with room around it gets carried more than a bag covered in copy. Check the imprint area listed on each product page, and remember that zippers, pockets and gussets can eat into the usable space.
