Choosing pins

Small as it is, a lapel pin carries a lot of meaning for the person wearing it. Unions, service clubs, non-profits, associations and companies marking long service all use custom pins to say someone belongs or has earned something. Convention crowds will trade them and collect them. It's a modest gift by size, but a well-made one often gets saved in a jewellery box for good.

Simplify your artwork before you start, because detail vanishes at this scale. Most logos need to lose their tagline, along with any thin outlines and subtle gradients. Solid shapes and a limited colour palette look sharper, and your proof will give you a clear view of how the design comes across. If it's hard to read on screen at actual size, it won't be any better on a lapel.

Consider how it'll be worn as well. Pins going on a blazer, a lanyard or a ball cap all need a backing that stays put. For a recognition program, think about a series, with a slightly different design or colour for each milestone, so the milestone pin becomes something people look forward to rather than something handed over once and forgotten.
